Heritage in Schools - Biodiversity

11th Nov 2025

On Tuesday, November 4th, Annette from Heritage in Schools came to give a talk to each class about biodiversity. We began by talking about how there would be enough hedgerows in Ireland to wrap around the world 17 times. About 400 years ago 80% of Ireland was forests and now it is just 2%. Ireland is one the countries with the least number of trees in Europe.

Annette told us about bogs, trees, plants and animals.

Annette asked some of us to fill a large pot with soil. We put in five oak tree seeds, spaced evenly apart and we put them beside the small pots the younger classes had done earlier. Annette and her friend have a tree nursery and they will grow our trees for the next 3 years!

Finally, we played a game called Púca. Someone said the rhyme “Púca, púca, is mise an púca. Púca, púca, cad í an púca?” and at the end they say an animal. Everyone had to act it out. It was great fun and we really enjoyed her visit.
